Criminal Justice Modernization

Judge Becerra has taken fact-based approaches toward modernizing the justice system and this is clear through the creation of a Criminal Justice Task Force and a Criminal Justice Summit that spearheaded the modernization efforts of our county judicial system. To avoid duplicating efforts, Commissioners Court asked Judge Becerra to covert the task force into the Criminal Justice Coordinating Commission.

Since the creation, we have hired an additional bond officer that will identify those that are eligible for bond, pass that information up to the judges, and help them make a more informed decision. Additionally, our budget has allocated funds toward the creation of a magistration department that consists of an associate judge, a justice clerk, and contract services to limit the number of individuals who pass through the jail. We also work closely with the Texas Indigent Defense Commission and have been awarded a grant that will allow Hays County to administer a multi-county program through the Texas non-profit, myPadilla, which provides defense attorneys with an online platform to interview clients, submit secure intake forms, and receive written advisory information individualized for each of their clients. Judge Becerra’s efforts on investing in our county by protecting our constitutional rights are a part of his mission to enact meaningful change in Hays County.
